Commands - Indian Head

The mission of Naval Support Activity South Potomac is to help sustain combat readiness through effective and efficient shore installation management and support. NSASP serves as the host activity responsible for providing shore installation management for all supported commands resident on Naval Support Facility Dahlgren, Va. Shore installation management functions encompass all land, buildings, and support services. As the base landlord, Naval Support Activity South Potomac provides management functions for all supported commands, including personnel support (Morale, Welfare and Recreation and child care), facility support (Public Works), public safety (physical security, law enforcement, fire department), environmental and waste management, supply (materials management, property disposal, and warehousing) and public affairs.

Indian Head Division
Naval Surface Warfare Center

(IHDIV, NSWC). 
 

As the principal Energetics Center for DoD, IHDIV provides primary technical capability in energetics (explosives, propellants, and pyrotechnics) through engineering, fleet and operational support, manufacturing technology, limited production, industrial base support, and secondary technical capability through research, development, test and evaluation for energetic materials, ordnance devices and components, and related ordnance engineering standards to include chemicals, propellants and their propulsion systems, explosives, pyrotechnics, warheads, and simulators. IHDIV provides support – including special weapons support, explosive safety, and ordnance environmental support – to all warfare centers, military departments and the ordnance industry.

Naval Ordnance Safety and Security Activity
(NOSSA). 
 

NOSSA’s primary mission is to establish standard policy and procedures for and provide global oversight of Department of Navy explosives safety, ordnance physical security and ordnance environmental matters, insensitive munitions, and the Indian Head Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center ordnance quality evaluation program. Additional management responsibilities include supervision over special offices, reserve units, and other field activities that perform explosives safety inspections. The Explosives Safety Support Offices (ESSOLANT and ESSOPAC) continue to report as detachments to NOSSA.

Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Division (EODTECHDIV).  

The mission of NAVEODTECHDIV is focused on eliminating the hazards from unexploded ordnance (UXO) that jeopardize U.S. operations in support of the National Security Strategy. The command exploits technology and intelligence to develop and deliver EOD information, tools, equipment, and their life cycle support, to meet the needs of joint service EOD operating forces and other customers.

Naval Sea Logistics Center, Detachment Indian Head  

SEALOG serves as the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) headquarters center for applied technologies and solutions, and as the center for logistics operating systems support for the Fleet Logistics Support Directorate. SEALOG provides testing; prototyping, and implementation of corporate and logistics related information applications for the naval shipyards, fleet support and logistics activities, program executive offices, and other NAVSEA field activities.
       

Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC).  

Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC) supports the warfighter in their efforts to manage information on and off the battlefield. This includes being an independent operational test and evaluation/assessor of the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) and other DoD C4I acquisitions; identifying and solving Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence (C4I) and Combat Support Systems interoperability deficiencies; providing C4I joint and combined interoperability testing, evaluation and certification; bringing C4I interoperability support, operational field assessments, and technical assistance to the warfighting commanders, services, and agencies; and providing training on C4I systems.

U.S. Marine Corps Chemicial Biological Incident Response Force (CBIRF).  

When directed, the Chemical Biological Incident Response Force responds to terrorist incidents involving the use of chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear (CBR-N) weapons of mass destruction in order to assist local, state, or federal agencies and designated commanders in the conduct of post-incident mitigation actions by providing capabilities for agent detection and identification; casualty extraction, extrication, and decontamination; and emergency medical care and stabilization of contaminated personnel.
